What Are The Differences Between Big Box Store Paints and Retail Paints?

Believe it or not, there are a few key differences between retail paint stores and big box store paints (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.). First and foremost, it’s important to note that the latter are going to provide you with much more quality. However, you will end up paying a bit more per bucket for them. As with most products in life, you get what you pay for when choosing between retail and big box store paints.

Big Box Store Paints

If you’re going to spend a few extra dollars at big box stores like Lowes or Sherwin-Williams then you’ll be receiving quality paint. These paints typically don’t contain that strong of an odor and cost about $30 per gallon. Some of the more expensive ones can hover around $45 per gallon. Nonetheless, they are ideal for several coats and will definitely get the job done.

Retail Paints

As you may already imagine, the benefits associated with retail paints is that they’re far cheaper than commercial ones. However, it is important to note that you’re not going to receive the same quality paint than if you were to purchase at a bigger location. Retail paints are very budget-friendly and can cost anywhere from $10 to $20 per gallon.

Which One Works Best?

Pricing and paint quality are the two key differences between purchasing retail paints and big box store paints. You’ll generally receive the same type of service at each location and you can typically find multiple locations in whatever city you’re located in. As a general rule of thumb, always go with a big box store if you’re going to be painting more than 3 rooms within your home. You don’t want to compromise quality just to save a few extra dollars.
